Soft & Hard Enamel Pins

About Soft Enamel Pins

Soft Enamel Pins are created by adding only enough enamel to cover the surface of the recessed areas of die struck or cast metal. Then, the pin goes through a baking process to harden the enamel. Since the enamel is below the metal edges, the pin has a textured look and feel.

Soft Enamel Pins are the most popular type of pins on the market. They have the widest variety of finish and enamel colors available. They allow greater, finer details in designs. They are also the most cost-effective type of enamel pin.

Advantages

  • Capable of finely detailed and intricate designs
  • Full enamel color and metal plating options
  • Textured look and feel
  • Cost Effective

Disadvantages

  • Prone to scratches
  • Silk screen printing not possible (due to textured surface)
  • Not as premium looking as hard enamel

About Hard Enamel Pins

Hard Enamel Pins (sometimes also called, cloisonné pins) are created by pouring enamel into the recessed areas of die struck or cast metal. All recessed areas are fully filled. The pin is then baked at very high temperatures to harden the enamel. It is then polished smooth to ensure that the enamel is at the same level as the metal edges. This gives the pin a perfectly smooth finish on the surface.

Hard Enamel Pins provide the most high-quality, premium look and design. They are also very durable.

Advantages

  • Premium look, higher quality finish
  • Smooth, polished surface
  • Durable and scratch resistant
  • Silk screen printing and details can be added

Disadvantages

  • More expensive (due to extra production steps)
  • Limited metal plating options (no rainbow plating or dyed metal)
  • Less detail (some line detail is lost during the polishing process)

Plating Options

Other Options

Screenprint

Screenprint extra details or full designs over finished hard enamel pins. This adds an extra bit of splash with fine details. This is especially useful when you want to include small text or numbers in your design, which would otherwise be impossible in either soft or hard enamel.

Epoxy Filling

Soft Enamel pins can be filled with a clear or colored epoxy/resin. This is an extra finishing step that can create a smooth surface versus the normal textured finish of soft enamel pins. It also adds a sense of dimensionality due to the transparent or semi-transparent nature of epoxy.

Digital Printing

You can have a full CMYK design or picture printed directly onto a smooth flat metal surface. The printed image is then covered by a protective dome or other coating. This option is useful when you have a design too detailed for enamel or screen printing.

Backstamp

A backstamp is a logo, text, signature or web url located on the back of the pin. It is the extra finishing touch that will give customers information on where to find your brand or which artist created the design. It is extra space to promote yourself, band or brand.
