PRINTING OPTIONS

Screen Printing

Screen printing is the oldest and most common printing method used for t-shirts and other apparel. It is highly regarded for its vibrant and long lasting colors. It is especially suitable for bulk orders.

The screen printing process involves the creation of a stencil that is then used in combination with a nylon mesh to expose only the desired surface area to print. Ink is then spread evenly across the mesh area using a squeegee. This creates a thin layer of color on the surface of the material (and into the fabric depending on how tight the material weave is). Each color in the design requires its own screen. So, the process is best used for limited color designs. It is more costly on small orders. However, since the screens can be reused, it becomes more economical and efficient when printing a large number of items.

PROS

Relatively cost efficient for larger orders

Compatible with most material types

Ink is pressed into and over fabric, creating a durable surface

CONS

X Limited colors per design

X Best suited to simpler designs

X Process is less environmentally friendly

Direct To Garment (DTG) Printing

DTG printing involves a process very similar to printing a sheet of paper in your home or office printer. Only, instead of paper, you insert a t-shirt into the printer. Garment ink and a special textile printer is used to ensure the highest quality.

The advantages of DTG printing include the ability to print highly detailed designs and allow a lower quantity print run. Even a single shirt, as a test. However, the DTG process is more expensive and limited to cotton materials only.

PROS

Can print complicated and detailed designs

Very fast production

Low minimum orders and one-offs

CONS

X Cotton t-shirts, only

X Slightly more expensive

X Will begin to fade, long term, over repeated washing

Dye Sublimation

Dye Sublimation is best used for large designs. Typically used for t-shirts with an “all over” design look. The process uses a liquid dye that penetrates polyester fibers and then solidifies. This enables a crisp, clean look. It is durable and long lasting as the dye basically becomes a part of the fibers.

The Dye Sublimation process is more expensive and time consuming. The finishing requires heat and pressure to properly set. The materials are also more limited as cotton cannot be used. Only polyester.

PROS

Smooth, durable finish (will not crack or peel)

Large and all-over shirt designs possible

CONS

X Relatively expensive compared to other options

X Works only on polyester fabrics
